About the Project
Wikipedia on Aruba is part of a community-driven initiative supported by Wikimedia Nederland to expand access to knowledge in Papiamento. The project is led by Ginelly Quandt and Ricardo Arends and focuses on creating and sharing content that is both relevant and accessible to the local population of Aruba. Our mission is to build a rich body of content in Papiamento that serves learners, readers, and researchers across the island and beyond.
Role Overview
We are seeking Papiamento Content Translators & Editors to support the translation and editing of Wikipedia content. Your main responsibility will be translating the introductions of Dutch-language articles from the Kennis platform into clear, accurate Papiamento.
These introductions are the first and most important introduction articles we give to new Wikipedia contributors, to provide understanding of the topic and platform. By translating them, you help ensure that Papiamento speakers have immediate access to essential information.
Main Responsibilities
- Translate introductory sections of articles from Dutch (Kennis platform) into Papiamento
- Ensure translations are accurate, easy to read, and culturally appropriate
- Edit and proofread existing Papiamento content for clarity and correctness
- Help create or improve full articles where needed, based on community needs
- Work with Google Drive to upload and organize your work
- Follow editorial guidelines provided by the Wikipedia Aruba team
Location: Aruba (Remote work)
Time Commitment: 2–3 hours per week
Duration: 6 months
Compensation: Symbolic payment of 10 florins per hour
Start Date: Immediate / Ongoing
Requirements
- Strong writing and reading skills in Papiamento
- Good understanding of Dutch (reading level)
- Basic digital literacy: ability to use Google Email and Drive
- A laptop or computer with internet access
- Reliability and ability to meet weekly time commitments
- A passion for language, learning, and community work
